The 2017 Palarong Pambansa was the 60th edition of the annual multi sporting event for Filipino student-athletes. Athletic associations from the country’s 18 regions were competed in different sporting events and discipline. The games were held at Binayaran Sports Complex San Jose de Buenavista City, Antique, Philippines last April 23-29, 2017.

The opening ceremony kicked off on April 23, 2017 with over 12, 000 student athletes from elementary and secondary schools were united. This was the first time the Antique province hosted the biggest national sports event.

One of the main parts of the afternoon program was the grand parade carrying the theme “Converges Youth Power, Builds Sustainable Future,” and a fly-by and sky dive by the Philippine Air Force (PAF). Another high point of this year’s Palaro was the lighting of the cauldron, lead by former Southeast Asian Games Heptathlon Queen Elma Muros-Posadas, the first Palarong Pambansa Parangal Lifetime Achievement Awardee.

The Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Athletic Association representing the Region IX is composed of 7 delegations namely Isabela City, Zamboanga City, Dipolog City, Pagadian City, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur. They garnered 5 gold medals and 17 bronze medals during the event.

Student-athletes from Zamboanga del Sur Sports Academy gave their best in their individual sports event, just like Dominic Dacal who brought gold medal in Elementary Swimming Freestyle Relay. In Elementary Men’s Artistic Gymnastics, Joshua Catao also garnered Bronze medal, as well as Nikke Gelbolingo for Arnis Extralight Weight and Nusair Lao for Taekwondo Light Middleweight.

The support of the Provincial Government of Zamboanga del Sur gives the athletes an encouragement to boost their skills and abilities in terms of sports activities. It helps the athletes to be more productive and be role models who can contribute to nation building.
